The Evolution of Tech-Savvy Tooth Fairies – A New Era In Pediatric Dentistry

Pedodontics or paediatric dentistry is the dental specialty that deals with the dental needs of children and teenagers. The small and delicate area of operation in kids and the mixed dentition together make diagnosis challenging. Buildup of plaque, initial stage cavities and gum issues often get overlooked by parents too.

With that as the foundation, Dr. Rija Asghar, a Global Dentists’ Pool member, tells us how modern dental AI tools and software are contributing to early detection of plaque, cavities, dental age, and more.

She further adds innovative AI and Machine Learning based tech that can predict future dental crowding or malposed dental structures easily.

Can AI Be an Extra Pair of Eyes for a Dental Examiner?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used in dentistry, particularly in analyzing clinical data and diagnosing diagnostic aids. It is also becoming popular in education, where it could help dental tutors and examiners in reviewing various documents and tasks. The grading process in dental education is complex and can be challenging due to subjectivity, bias, and strict timelines. AI-based tools like ChatGPT, based on Large Language Models (LLM), can automate the grading process, potentially removing subjectivity and saving time.

AI can evaluate answers and projects, validate references and research, and provide detailed feedback. However, concerns persist about its impact on students, such as students focusing on formulaic essays. Ensuring the accuracy and reliability of AI modes requires ongoing monitoring and awareness, and faculty members must consistently review the AI’s performance and adjust the training data and algorithms as needed.

Ethical issues related to fairness and transparency must be maintained to prevent biases and ensure fair student evaluations. Implementing AI-models in an academic setting requires sufficient technical infrastructure and support, as well as investment in training faculty members and providing resources to seamlessly integrate AI into their systems. Overall, AI can be a promising solution for automating the grading process in dental education, but it requires careful implementation and ongoing monitoring to ensure its effectiveness. The frustration is tangible and I, for one, identified as an expat dentist for many years. Dentists who’ve gone through & spent on a formal education, identify … Continue reading An Expat Dentists’ Dilemma

How aesthetic is too aesthetic?

Perfection is a lovely concept. Apart from being the catalyst for self-discipline, innovation, creativity, time-management and more – it drives ambition. Although achieving a 100% perfection is a myth, we still use ‘ideal case scenarios’ as a baseline to guess deviations and potential solutions in almost all fields of work. Among these is dentistry which doesn’t simply heal ailing individuals anymore but has evolved to … Continue reading How aesthetic is too aesthetic?
